Life imprisonment (paroled at 75 in certain extenuating circumstances): on the grounds that they might have occasion to repent, that a miscarriage of justice may have occurred, and because western, Judaeo-Christian, jurisprudence tries to achieve a balance between retribution and rehabilitation.
As Frank Herbert's late wife said: 'revenge is for children, and the emotionally immature'. It debases both perpetrator and victim: and where does it ever end? Some Neapolitan families have been killing each others' family members (yes, including children: how very noble) for 300 years, and some Irish clans are getting close......

So I assume you'd happily stand by and let the Law take its course, if one of your kids committed a capital crime? As a matter of principle?
Sorry to put it so bluntly, but this is the other side of the question usually asked in this debate: 'would you then be in favour of execution, if one of your kids were brutally murdered?
Most prisoners in the UK do do work of one sort of another, for three broad reasons: to keep them occupied (less time for brooding/hatching escape plans etc.), to aid rehabilitation ('self-respect-building'), and as a very partial reparation to the society they have offended against.
Most recent UK studies have suggested that imprisoning offenders has a negligible effect on recidivism rates, whereas non-custodial re-education has a small but greater result. Worryingly, the UK has by far the highest prison population in the EU, and the highest rate of street- and petty crime.
I'm not sure what the answer is, but imprisoning people for life for three consecutive petty crimes is 'breaking a butterfly upon a wheel'........and redolent of a return to Victorian perversions such as 'Social Darwinism'.

I think you're thinking of the change from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar in 1582.
Around Jesus' alleged birth, several calendars were in use in Asia Minor, principally the Roman one, which itself gave birth to the Julian.

True: and a lot of dictatorships love the death penalty for precisely the reason that complaints from the grave are easier to refute..............and I deliberately didn't get into the way that the US Fundamentalist lobby is apparently influencing penal policy, along the lines of 'an eye for an eye...'.
Seems odd that Bush's mob only dislike MUSLIM fundamentalists.

Thanks for all the info, WillieBo. Not boring in the least to anyone interested in history, like myself.

It is also worth bearing in mind that the condemned can wait decades for his death sentence to be carried out, so your tax dollars are still going towards feeding, clothing and housing him.

In emotive cases, there's probably only a handful here who wouldn't be baying for the execution of the killer. But, by taking his life away we make ourselves killers---or rather we pay someone else to do it so that our own hands never get bloodied. So while I may dream of a life as a time-travelling vigilante, killing the Sutcliffes and Wests and Bundys and so on of this world, the truth is that would make me as bad as they are. Prison isn't the ideal solution, but no one has come up with a more acceptable one.
