they were heading towards pop, so EC left and joined John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. Now there's an underrated band. Probably your average Joe Public has never even heard of them but one of the most important groups of their time, also very important in the development of Clapton's career.

I don't think Zep are overrated, and hey! I'm a real rock fan as well you know, now the Beatles and the Who are IMO overrated). But I, like you, prefer Cream. My tastes are more towards the Blues and R&B side of the whole rock/blues thing (Hendrix is #1 as far as I'm concerned, not just as a guitarist but also as a general artist/musician/performer).
People always like to put together their dream band which normally consists of the likes of Hendrix, Keith Moon/John Bonham on drums, someone like Freddie Mercury on vocals etc... personally I'd just have the Cream line-up but with with Jimi instead of Eric on Guitar.

True: Ginger and Jack both had jazz backgrounds, which is why they sounded so different.
Hence their story about conning Clapton.

badge was with george harrison wasnt it?

hmmm to me...ive decided v.recently that eric is my all time greatest guitarist....his back catalogue is stunning ...ok ok so jimi was great andoriginal but from perspective of guitarist/sorta musician i find jimis stuff not as "unattainably" high quality as eric.....sunshine, tales of brave, layla.... are the kinda one off type riffs....although i do thank jimi for adding the sludgy darker sound to things which gave my fav bands a path - soundgarde, faith no more, alice in chains etc....

back in the day sabbath said they were inspired by new darker sound and the only ppl doing it were cream and jimi....i think that says it all really doesnt it...claptons ALWAYS delivered ...whoever/whenever hes working with....im also a riff obsessed person and ive been trying to trace the kinda riff i love as far back as possible and i dont think neone was doing it before Cream and The Kinks....both bands to me are as good as beatles catalogue with as good a songs that are well known...just maybe fewer in quantity
srry goldenballs didnt mean to sound condescending, u just sounded a lil bit too excited in ur original thread and im kinda anti-idolatry although i respect it was obv a good day for u :D

btw how many of u have listened to You Need Love by the small faces? ..funny innit...

well, i don't really get what you mean regarding "unattainably" high quality as eric etc...'
each to their own, not everyone likes the same stuff.
For what it's worth all the guitarists of the time including EC were 'blown away' when Jimi came along, and EC happily admitted at the time that Jimi was better and could play more.
I guess EC's stuff is easier to get into as it generally falls into more recognizable catagories (ie, straight blues or r&b) whereas Jimi's stuff is a little more unique (an aquired taste perhaps).
Jimi and EC are my two favourite artists and I don't really like comparing them as I like them both so much. Blimey, if I had ever met them and shook their hands I would have got even more excited than when meeting Plant, I'm sorry that you may be 'too cool' for all this idolatry stuff as you put it, the irony is that in my job i've met hundreds of famous people over the years from all walks of life but I tend not to be too bothered about it, but meeting Plant was a big deal to me. I'm only 27 and would never have had the chance to see these guys first time round at a gig or something.

ok fair enough sorry... wasnt trying to offend or upset was just saying. i dunno what it is about a lot of jimis stuff....just with hindsight from the perspective of a guitarist it seems somewhat "doable..."once uve created the style....whereas eric laid down dozens of riffs with Cream that for me are way past it....just pick a random track - i feel free....play those three chords and its more instantly recogniseable than jimi....but he did have some cool songs and for someone who likes the whole metallica/pantera thing i dont really see his guitar work as being all that incredible....its a relative thing....back in the 60s i can imagine how it would have been.

oh and btw im not "too cool" i just dont believe in that kinda thing and i feel theres too much misplaced worshipping going on and it undermines anyone who actually did anything worthwhile....fair enough :)

where do u work btw...u never did say, if u dont mind confessing all

Truly one of the great singers

Recently bought 2 Led Zep DVDs as a gift for a mate

Might have to pop on over to watch them

I still think Robert Plant sounds best on the single Big Log

It showcases his voice to perfection

cheers
