Blair cosied up to Murdoch very closely in 97 and 01 to gain the support of his papers. Don't expect any different next time round. The Sun is a truly odious paper, and yet there are worse---the ostensibly Labour-supporting Daily Record up here for one. It's a vicious, vindictive version of the Mirror without that organ's integrity!

Couldn't agree more - crass, red-rag rubbish, and cynicaly timed considering who's been on the front pages recently (you can guarantee certain people - nay, editors - would demand the death penalty fo Huntley, regardless of Davis' statement). We already have a national press more than capable of influencing judicial outcomes, so god only knows what letting them get anywhere near the gallows would lead us to. And we've hung the wrong man before, haven't we.

Giles said of Murdoch:
"What gives him the right to determine the political future of the UK?"

Er, just for the record, Rupert Murdoch doesn't actually get a vote in UK elections.

Murdoch is a businessman who wants to make as much money as possible. If that means touting for the Tories instead of Labour that's what he'll do.

Don't blame Murdoch, blame the stupid/ignorant/lazy members of the great British public who will quite happily believe anything that's written in the papers.
