i wouldn't suggest we execute every killer, everyone can make a mistake, but do it more than once.

some crimes eg serial rape, child molestation are equall evil in my mind and don't in most penal codes result in a possible death sentence - may be they should.

there is the view that its down to the translation between differant texts and languages. and syntax.

colloquial language also causes problems eg.
there are pigs in the street - could mean there are porcine animals in the street or there are policemem in the street

in many ancient languages because females married very young, sometimes before puberty, the term virgin was used to mean a young unmarried female rather than a female who has not yet had sexual intercourse, though being young and unmarried suggested not having had intercourse.

I think it's certainly true to summarise the religious views of Jesus as unorthodox. But at the time he was only one of several different cultists within Judea.

There were all manner of differences of view, from liturgy to property ownership.

It is apparent that modern Israel is no different now, being held in thrall to an orthodox religious elite.

Certainly he gained a reputation as a stud with women long before he became powerful and famous.

The speculation that he also enjoyed men is the episode in Bythnia with King Nicomedes of Bithynia when Caesar was sent there to work for Marcus Thermus, governor of the province. He stayed there for some time.

Later in his life when he starts to become successful and powerful, the rumours about an alleged affair with Nicomedes are used against him, most accusingly by the poet Catullus, encouraged of course by Caesar's enemies such as Pompey. He was called a cinaedus, essentially a passive in a homosexual relationship. A few years later Suetonius merely talks of rumours of an improper liaison with the king.

But historians I think rightly see this as spite and gossip to discredit the man. Plutarch of course gives no indication of Caesar's love life maintaining that he was too focused on his own ambition and career. The episode with Nicomedes has long been discredited.

Whether he was bisexual is open to debate ; there simply exists no evidence as there would be for later Roman leaders. But what really is highly unlikely is that he was a paedophile. He would not have achieved what he did in Rome and especially in the Army had he been. Even Tiberius had to go to his island fortress of Capri for his alleged indulgences.

The issue of Roman sexual mores is another subject altogether.

And wasn't he supposed to have been an epileptic?
To tie in with someone's pet theory about many great men suffering this illness.....?

As usual, jj, pretty much to the mark.

His ancient biographers, Suetonius, Appianus and the ever faithful Plutarch cite instances of Caesar suffering from the 'falling down sickness' i.e. epilepsy. Or in my case Friday night drunkenness.

But it is possible it helps to explain his impatience and arrogance in wanting to 'get things done' after his military campaigns once a civilian in Rome.

Sorry, steve, the epilepsy refers to Julius Caesar not 'JC'. No historical exclusive for you my friend.
