Because a) He's a movie star
b) He admires Noam Chomsky (surely you've heard of him?)
and now c) He wore a shirt with the UN flag on it for the premiere of LOTR Return of the King here in Wellington yesterday.

What about the raging lefties like John Wayne, Charlton Heston, Ronald Reagan and the newly elected (God help us all) Arnie? Should they also have kept their traps shut? Democracy is supposed to involve all shades of opinion being allowed to have their say---even if those opinions are being spouted by actors.

I didn't hear the Clooney remark. I do recall Whoopi introducing Tim Robbins and Sarandon at the Oscars, telling people to listen carefully because they were bound to be pissed off at something . . . .

Heston could be an awful ham at times; other times, though, he was immense. Nothing to do with his politics, just his performances. If he doesn't want his Alzheimer's to be an issue, he shouldn't make public pronouncements that allows people to make it one.

In the end, these people are actors and receive adulation only when they're speaking other people's words. Left without a scriptwriter, few of them have anything meaningful to say (a bit like me actually).

Can't say Mr Selleck's acting ever impressed me---it was mostly a moustache-driven performance. And the thought of him as Indiana Jones sends an enormous shudder or horror down my spine.
