Help re jpegs

This is bound to make me look like a complete numpty but here goes:

Q: How do you add text to a jpeg/photo ?

I have tried doing this in Microsoft paint but the result looks like shit. The photo and text lose all sharpness.

Don't use Microsoft paint!
Use either Photoshop or Paintshop Pro.
Open your image, create a new layer and use the text tool.
Flatern the image and save... simple as that!

I use U-LEAD 3 which is quite easy to use as you simply add the text & then save it under a different name, PHOTOSHOP & MGI PHOTO SUITE 4 are brillant for editing but take some learning.
