to be honest, after viewing it again i was a bit disappointed in 'black cat'. i last saw it in the mid-eighties in some long defunct, london flea pit (the scala?) and the passage of time seems have played a bit merry with my memory.

as you say, the acting was far more mannered than my recollections allowed for and atmospherically, i found it far less affecting than i expected. probably because the narrative lacked any real dynamism (not noirish at all, in fact).

in terms of sheer cineophilia, i would rate ulmer's pulp tour-de-force 'detour' above it (the film which gave new meaning to the expression 'hanging on the telephone'). bonkers but utterly brilliant!

Cherrrrrrist...one was fine, two is bloody silly, three is milking the franchise 4 all it's worth. Hollywood Rule No. 79: sequels almost always suck ass- and rarely make that much dosh (yes, I know this is a Canadian effort.....).
How you can claim, as these cine auteurs so often do, to be an artiste, when you repeat the same old cliche again and again......oh, yes: Damien Hirst......

Auteur control

Post by The Last Word »

Cine auteurs can control what's on screen, but, because of the tricky finances involved with film, i.e. the selling of rights needed to acquire initial funding, often have little control of the finished product after completion - especially if they're not quite established as film-makers yet. Many franchises are thus set up at the owning companies behest, regardless of what the original makers think. However, setting up a successful franchise can provide you with a few more bargaining chips for your next original premise.

You replied to the top- in which I appear to be recommending these cinematic feasts.
So why would I turn the box off?
