And I always thought it was Advance Australia Fair.
Uncle Sam's is OK if it is not sung by some pop star before their big sporting occasions such as Superbowl or World Series.
Also did you know that the national anthem of Liechtenstein uses the same tune as God Save The Queen???

Naturally
Here was I thinking it was from Fawlty Towers
I once possessed a double cd titled 250 years of great classical music
Listened to it night and day
Still made no difference to me being able to recognise rachmaninoff from Strauss or Puccini from Dvorak
Guess i just don't have the ear for it
cheers

Re: Name Me Some Uplifting Music
AKA the Pastoral symphony (his version of the Four Seasons, if you like).
Part of it might be familiar to you as the music played while Edward G Robinson was being euthanatised in 'Soylent Green'.
Covers all the moods, although my favourite B. symph. is the 7th (another film reference- 'Zardoz', this time, which while critically panned I really liked. Although Connery in a bear-skin jock-strap was hilarious..........

Re: Name Me Some Uplifting Music
Indeed it is Advance Australia Fair
Fair call about pop stars singing National Anthems or just singing in general
Smart move by Liechtenstein
There are very few good pieces of classical music that do a National Anthem justice IMHO
To hear some of them you'd think they were written the night before
cheers

i totally agree - haunting in it's perfection.
thanx for the feedback. i've only two versions myself (which i now know to be rather pathetic) and one of them is unattributed. the other is by the london chamber orchestra, i believe. i'm a bit of an ignoramus in matters classical but have started picking up the odd piece in recent years.
i'll keep an eye out for 'english string music' - sounds just the ticket.
