must-see de jour:

and it's free!

as are the british museum (check it out for the great court, as well as the reading room and all the old stuff), the national gallery (resplendent in it's newly pedestrianised setting directly on trafalgar square), the natural history museum, the science museum (groovy lord of the rings exhibition currently running), plus my favourite - the museum of london...

If you're heading for the Tates, you might want to try the Saatchi Gallery at the old County Hall on the Thames. The Chapman Bros. are on at the moment - bloody good:~)

Eight quid a pop, mind.

As far as accommodation goes I can't really help you! I would agree with Chrissie and say get a One-day travel card, as they are the cheapest and easiest way of getting around. The London eye is a good start or finish to the day if you get off at Westminster it?s a five minute walk you get to see BIG Ben etc and then once on the ?eye? you get a good idea of where some attractions are, can?t remember price think it?s around ?15 per person though! If you get the chance Covent Garden is a must the street performers are excellent and there are also loads of reasonable places where you can get something to eat and drink. One last thing if you do decide to go along the riverbank where a coat as it?s usually quite cold and windy! Hope this has been of some help.

I stayed at the Royal National in 1990 50 pounds a day

Basic but what more do you want

Got to agree Covent(spelling) Garden is brilliant

I only spent 7 days in London(3 before the Contki tour/and 4 after) and the only thing that has stayed with me is seeing a black hip dude trying to teach a goofy white 10 year old how to do a dance.....the simple things are the best...I gave my donation in coins from the continent(20 pounds worth)...appreciated no doubt

Madame Tussauds is an interesting travel through history if you've got a spare hour

cheers
