Great voice but an egotistical bitch. When I lived in Bermuda, Ms Ross and her then husband, a shipping magnate from Norway who's name escapes me, regularly dined at our complex as he had a house on the island, and Ms Ross insisted on being waited upon by white staff and not the blacks.

Some fabulous pop from the sixties and early seventies steve. The songwriting teams from Motown came up with so many classics. But I have to agree with the other threads on here re : Ms. Ross and some of the other girl groups from the label. I didn't like them. For me the Queen is and remains Aretha.

First record I ever bought : Stevie Wonder's 'Never Had a Dream Come True' from 1969. And others, Temps' 'Just My Imagination', Four Tops' 'Still Water', Originals 'Baby I'm For Real'.

And then Marvin and Stevie started their series of brilliant albums in the seventies. I admit to being a complete fucking fogey when it comes to modern pop music, but the music I grew up with still does it for me. And Motown weren't even my favourite label. 'Cos true soul fans love particular labels as well as artists. I feel more saddo lists coming on from me.

'Don't Play That Song'. As JB would say, a stone to the bone classic. Originally done by Ben E. King. And the title track from a brilliant 1970 Aretha album.Fantastic stuff. Her playlist is too long for this thread, because the quality of her records between 1967-1976 remains absolutely fucking outstanding.

didnt know ben did the orig it took yrs for stand by me to be a hit,im sure dionne warick did the orig say a little prayer in 60s.

Unfortunately 'Stand By Me' is one of those great songs that everyone thinks they can sing. John Lennon thought he could.

Dionne Warwick did sing the original 'I Say a Little Prayer' in 1967. It was the B-side of her version of the theme from the film 'Valley of the Dolls'. But people started to buy the single for the B-side.

There is a link between Dionne Warwick, Ben E. King and 'Stand By Me'. Miss Warwick is said to be in the backing group (The Gospelaires) on the record.

This was the US version, steve, on Wand/Scepter. After the success of the B-side in the States this was the track they issued in the UK. I think her UK company was Pye.
