Yes he probably was. What is your point ? What is its relevance ? Like nearly everyone on this forum (dedicated to pornography) in one way or another. But Ace is right. Sounds old-fashioned to some but 'man's man' still has resonance for those of us who've experienced things around the world as opposed to those who've spent most of their waking life stuck in their bedroom.

And McQueen is still iconically cool. fast cars, women, travel, booze, drugs. And that was offscreen.

Yes, I'm sure like most others in his position he was an 'asshole'. But I pass comment on his cinematic and iconic qualities, not whether I want to go to the pub with him. And the point is this ; he actually lived a life. How many can say that ?

Willie is correct about Steve's persona off screen as well as on. Genuine cool personified. He had the balls to do what he wanted and especially loved the motorbike stunts in said film. He was good friends with Richard Attenborough after appearing in Great Escape and The Sand Pebbles (An excellent film) and was a regular at Stamford Bridge when in London in the 60's and 70's. There is a well known story where he threatened and scared genuine hard-man Ron 'chopper' Harris when Ron offered him a 'fag' which McQueen thought was a gay person and not a cigarette. True!!
He was happy to queue for his pie and a piss at The Shed End in those days and didn't have the star ego bollocks associated with lesser actors

I recall international pressure a few years back when they were 'forced' to return artwork and valable assets to Jewish reletives of the holocaust that had their valuables seized. No sign of any Nazi gold though, although we all know they have it
