No, Caractacus, It is I who should be apologising. There are only one or two topics that get the juices flowing and history is one of them. My formal education over some years is in history and I'm afraid it becomes second nature to me - like putting on a favourite overcoat or pair of comfy shoes. go away. It's in my blood and for some (my wife) I have a lifelong affliction.

I do not intend any such slight and would suggest that you display a rare sensibility and insight re : historical issues and any difference of opinion is down to my inability to express myself more warmly and mere degree of interpretation.

Some times I go on far too long - if only to try and elucidate and inform.

Once again, you have nothing to chastise yourself about - the fault is with me and the apologies are mine and sincere.

Perhaps I should start taking the same stuff as steve56.

That'll do for starters, magoo. Plus his salmon sandwiches for Sunday tea.

New World countries like America & Australia excluding the indigenous people are basically full of people from other continents

Laurel & Hardy regardless of where they trained or were from from was a product of the American Enviroment at the time

The conditions that would have existed in America would have been completely different to those in England at the same time

Would Laurel & Hardy have even got a look in in England?

cheers

You seem to have history on tap WillieBo

Can imagine its like the being the Dux of the class listening to friends who have just watch a docmentary and thought to comment

Hard to join in the conversation without sounding condescending

Funny how I studied Modern Eropean History for 2 years but don't recall that much about it

cheers

As a member of Fred Karno's, playing to packed music halls all over the UK, Stan Laurel "made it" before he ever went to America. Indeed it was the huge popularity of Karno's that earned the troupe an invitation to tour the US.

Of the two, Stan Laurel wrote 90% of the L&H scripts. Oliver Hardy did nothing but turn up late, often in a bad mood, yet got paid far more than his more talented British counterpart!!

No, WB---keep correcting, please. How else am I going to learn? I have an interest in history---but not so great that I retain enough of it to put forward a reasoned argument. My post was meant to be self-deprecating, not having a go at you. Cheers.
