I found that buying a new computer ( WIN XP Home Edition ) gave a new lease of life to the AOL 56k service I've used for the last 5 years.
Despite living in a house built 50 years ago with presumably equally ancient cabling I can now connect twice as fast as I used to and while I won't claim it never happens the old problem of frequent disconnections has all but disappeared.

Fewer users ought to render the service faster- so it's likely that your cynicism about their business tactics is justified.
PS Tiscali are wankers. But then again, so are almost all IT companies.

You could have them both on sure!, but your best using the aol uninstall to rid yourself of aol spam and other rubbish, you still have the freeserve ie, because when you install a isp using thier software it usually installs a new ie browser and always with thier name at the top right hand corner, it will probably happen if you install tesco net, doesnt make any odds, you must not worry so much you will get a kidney stone...........

You need your registry cleaned Magoo to truly get rid of AOL

Theres the company on the net advertising to clear it off for free in the Us of A by the next day....maybe a holidays in order?

Well worth getting a Computer Tech to clean it out

I've seen documentaries showing brand new computers being cleaned out the day after being bought and the overall performance being improved by 90 percent

You only need look at to see how much dross is in the windows operating sytsems

cheers
