Starsky & Hutch - 1st review

Post by Terry May »

Needs no explantion really

STORY
A dedicated Starsky and a job loathing Hutch are teamed up for the first time to bring down a drug baron on the verge of a huge deal.

PROS
- Some amusing set pieces

CONS
- not nearly funny enough

VERDICT
As with many comedy thrillers there is a wafer thin plot for the equally thin jokes to be hung on and this continues that tradition. And this is very much comedy by numbers type film making - drug mix up resulting in one of them ingesting drugs with hilarious consequences,CHECK, dressing up in daft disguises with hilarious consequences,CHECK, cops wrongfully bust the villain with hilarious consequences,CHECK! cameo appearances by original stars, CHECK and so on and so on. Unfortunately there are potentially some really funny sequences which are wasted - notably a disco dance routine and S&H as mimes which are just thrown away. Juliette Lewis as the villain's mistress reinforces the impression that her fantastic turn in Cape Fear was a fluke as she plays in another woefully underwritten role. Although Snoop Dogg as Huggy Bear is effective (despite a sneaking isuspicion that he's probably just being himself anyway). The . I like Ben Stiller but here you just get the impression he's treading water and reprising other comic roles he's previously played. And Owen Wilson has been better too. The action, like many of the jokes, is weak too. The overall impression you get is that they had some money leftover from another film so they dug out all the 70's costumes in wardrobe dept and made this. Frankly it's just very disappointing and will probably open to average reviews but disappear quickly afterwards.

Owen Wilson

He has a nose in the shape of a bum !
everytime I see him in a film , I try to not look closely at the nose , but then he has a close up and I spend the rest of the film thinking "BUM NOSE"

cheers for the reviews Terry !

Now you mention it that's what I spent a large portion of the film thinking about. How his nose got like that? born with it like that? accident? fight? surgery gone wrong? Most off putting!
