National Anthems

Post by DavidS »

The USA & Germany have ones. Wales & France certainly have ones. That is National Anthems to be proud of. Why haven't England? We have to share the uninspiring British one. If we did have one, what should it be?

If you think your current one sucks try Listening to some of the more obscure countries at the Olympics

Theres a finite amount of usable classical music for anthems but this seems to have been lost on a few nations

Clearly the worst Anthem is Australias...written just slow enough so those with learning disabilities can keep up but hardly a rousing Anthem like many I could name

cheers

What about the dirge that the Scots sing, no wonder their teams are generally pants in internationals.

Lovely story about the Irish footy squad having recruited an ace player with minimal Irish ancestery who says to the player standing next to him at his first international "That's a bloody aweful national anthem the other side have got".
"Shut up, you eejit, that's ours".

World Cup 1990.....An Irish team with a distinctive English flavour
only related by their great-great-great-great =great-Ma or Pa

Farcical

I think something something like a single rule that says you must be either have been born in that country or a resident for at least 10 years would put paid to that kind of blatant cheating

Australia is well known for allowing sporting immigrants in for the sake of another gold, silver or bronze medal

I am inclined to be flippant and suggest that W.A. Mozart's 'Musical Joke' might be suitable. More seriously, my choice would be the divinely beautiful third movement of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.
