My early experience of hardcore was similar to yours, Ace. I never really thought the American films were as good as the top European stuff. Some of the German & French films of the late 70's/early 80's were marvellous. Unfortunately most of us in the UK have only seen them in loop form. They really must have been wonderful in full on large screens in proper cinemas. I was fortunate to catch the tail end of this in Germany before video took over. Most modern American stuff is very poor, but even the Europeans now make mainly second rate porn. Much of the current British output is as good as you will find anywhere else. That said however, the British porn made for the European market earlier often wasn't at all bad. Why was the porn so much better then? Regarding Europe, I think it was because most of the directors and many of the actresses had moved from the softcore or even the non-sex cinema. They therefore knew how to direct and act. The films had proper scripts and, paticularly German ones, had a comedy theme. Occasionally you see a new film that almost reaches these heights but it is rare indeed.

I agree completely with Ace about American Porn of today.

Part of the attraction of the 70's/very early 80's porn was how cheesy it could be. I loved the dialogue (very pretentious) and the models (no silicone). And now seeing documentaries about porn in the 70/80s i understand why. The police use to give the filmakers loads of grief usually raiding a shoot, also there was a very real threat of Imprisonment!!!.

Anal Sex in porn has never done anything for me, and that is partly why the Golden Age was so good, there was very little content like that in them. But by far that period of time bought absolute superstars to the worlds attention. As Ace mentioned Jon Holmes, Lisa DeLeuuw, Seka, Desiree Cousteau (FANTASTIC), Aunt Peg, Little Oral Annie, Annette Haven, Tracey Adams, Vanessa Del Rio (FRIGHTENING) and of course Traci Lords.

It did not matter that the production budget was low, it was the content that counted.
