I just visited downloaded with no problems so maybe a more specific warning would be in order

Being prepared is half the battle when surfing

Which means don't surf without a firewall and anti-virus software

Of course spyware/malware/adware removal programs like adaware, spybot & spyblaster are essential after you've stopped surfing if you haven't fully secured your computer as detailed at

for a bigger overview

Many pieces of spyware/malware have the same disruptive effects as viruses

Lets face it there are a lot of beginners surfing the net who haven't a clue about computer security and only take an interest when they are

I'm using Windows 98 2nd edition on a 56k dial-up and only use anti-norton virus while surfing and I've have never been seriously infected
even after having been through thousands of links

Just luck i don't think so

Food for thought

I'm on Windows 98SE too Deuce. Seems like there's a benefit in not being up to date since the present nasties don't seem to be aimed at the older OSs.
Looking at the Microsoft newsgroups for IE and OE, many of the probs are suggested as being caused by malware but this may be MSs easy way out rather than admitting that Windows is riddled with annoying bugs.

Malware is only exploiting the initial programs not being written in the best possible way.....once again profit or arrogance getting in the way of quality IMHO

Microsoft is guilty as hell
Its cut corners purely for profit IMHO
Why else would experts in computing field come out and say if the programs were written properly in the first place many of these loop holes wouldn't exist

I wonder how many spyware/malware removal,firewall,anti-virus products Microsoft make?

Wouldn't be the first time a company has been unethical to raise its bottom line

Like a drug company making a disease and cure at the same time

I spoke too soon about avoiding virus attacks. I've just received a bogus MS security warning email with a patch attached. I'm glad I know that MS don't email security patches because my bloody ISP claims to filter for viruses but let it through and I havn't done anything yet about replacing AVG.

This free version might be worth a look using while your looking for a permanent solution
Says it covers 70,000 viruses

I used it for a while with no complaints

The downside is that the forum is in German and they don't answer emails
