Saddam Hussein
Saddam Hussein
In view of events in Iraq in the last few days, I am beginning to wonder if the way Saddam ran that country was not the appropriate way to manage it. What do others think?
Re: Saddam Hussein
Yeah, but he wouldn't give the yanks free oil would he ?
Re: Saddam Hussein
No. but he probably would now if he was restored to power. They could have him run the country under a franchise!

If you are in the minority trying to rule over the majority then Saddams way would indeed be the only way

Re: Saddam Hussein
So, a murderous tyranny is preferable to trying to give the people of a country some freedom? Don't know why the former Societ Union countries are bothering---they should be putting all their efforts into cloning Josef Stalin.
It is really scary what passes for judgment around here.

Re: Saddam Hussein
Democracy only works in countries naturally qualified for it. Iraq most certainly isn't. Eastern Europe is different.
Re: Saddam Hussein
And who's qualified to say who is entitled to democracy and who isn't?
There are factions in Iraq with different agendas, some are extremist Islamic groups, some want a return of the Ba'athist party of Saddam, while others see bin Laden as a modern-day Saladin. Given the varying political, social and religious differences in this country, what makes you think that we are worthy of democracy. Let's bring back Thatcher, only we'll give her the power to gas poor people. It's what we deserve.
Why do so many people in this country do the Pavlov's dogs bit? Whenever a headline appears in the Daily Mail, the knee jerk reaction is "something must be done": pull out our troops, leave the majority of people in Iraq (who will find their lives improved if we help them) at the mercy of the various gun-toting thugs who are taking advantage of the political situation to grab power. Since the people of Iraq have had their lives turned upside down by a war fought on a false premise (though the removal of Saddam can only be seen as a good thing), don't we have a responsibility to finish what we started?
