You have to wonder who kept the coverage going though

We've had a few sports commentators caught out spraying the floor crew with a few colourful swear words when they were 'off-air'

I used to steward at Cov City and was there when 'Big Ron' was manager and Strachan was his #2.
He used all kinds of colourful language and would pepper his words with 'fuck' and 'shit' on a very regular basis. I saw him scream at Dion Dublin for not pulling his weight several times and not once did I hear any words assosciated with Dublins skin colour. 'Move yer fucking arse' and 'Get stuck in you lazy fucker' were about as vicious as they came.
Ron is 'old school' and will call a spade a spade without it being deemed as insensitive or racist. There is still no excusing the fact that 'N***er' was said and he HAS been vilified for it, and rightfully so. Now he has been punished and lost a LOT of credibility, he should be left alone to rue his mistake.
He will bounce back, make no mistake.
Nice to see the Schmichael/Wright debate mentioned, I LOVE to see those 2 slags on BBC1 as pundits, all happy/jokey on camera and inside seething they have to share the same studio. Now THAT should be highlighted.

Re : The thread about football punditry a couple of days ago. 'Big Ron' talks absolute bollocks and has made himself a cult figure and a tidy fortune as a result. Sympathy would be misplaced, I think. As most have said, he used a word that is perhaps still the worst racist remark anyone can make even today. You cannot and should not be using words like that. So, he had to go. And he did the right thing by resigning.

Typical of the mass media in this country, they've swarmed all over him and seemed to relish his demise. Even to the extent of having Ian Wright (for fucks' sake) as someone qualified to give an informed opinion. Wiser counsel has come from others including (oh yes) Carlton Palmer.

Leave Ron alone now, I say. And I think Ace is right ; he'll be back. he'd be better than most of the woodentops on Sky. Judging by the horrific media accident that is Fox News, The Dirty Digger cares less about following public opinion than forming it.

One question : What was Ron's tv colleagues reactions to all this ?

I think that shows what little you know about language and context!

"Nigger" is a derogatory term used by whites about blacks. It is racist. As part of the fight against racism, some members of the black community (including many rappers) use the word as a form of empowerment and a method of "reclaiming" the word as their own.

Let's imagine that Ron Atkinson, instead of saying "lazy fucking nigger" about Desailly had said "lazy fucking yid" about a Jewish player. Would that be more or less acceptable to you, on the basis that (as far as I am aware) no Jewish rappers, (if there are any), use the word "yid" in the same way as black rappers use the word "nigger"?
