I think in other countries you are correct that a public holiday commemerates something but that is not the case with the summer holidays in the UK. The May Day one arguably commerates the proletariat's unsuccesssful struggle to free themselves from the chains of the capitalist system. The late spring holiday signifies nothing, although it used to be a celebration of Whitsun. The August Bank Holiday does not, and never has, celebrated anything. I am not arguing that the holidays connected with Christmas and Easter should be done away with.

Because it's a Pagan festival, and I approve of That Sort of Thing (as much as I approve of any religiosity, which is Not a Lot). Much better than all that Jehovah bollocks, at any rate.

The Daily Mail.

No, it's a largely irreligious one, despite people's claims to be adherents of one faith otr another. Take a look outside your door- can you see many who actually try to practice the beliefs the allegedly espouse? No, they're all behaving like utterly amoral shits, as usual.

You're taking my argument a bit far, as usual, but OK, let's ban religion completely. I'm not aware of Christian festivals being part of a BRITISH culture, whatever that may be..............I could make an equally good case for us celebrating Saturnalia and Lupercalia.

A sure sign of impending dotage. Both the grumpiness, and the dislike of change.

Perhaps we could keep the holidays and entertain the masses on those days by throwing the few remaining Christian to the lions.

On a serious note though, I have always had difficulty understanding why the Church has so enthusiastically conspired with commercial interests to build Christmas up beyond its religious significance, to the detriment of the far more important Easter. After all, everyone is born, but not everyone is executed and brought back to life.

One man's cherry-picking is another man's clarity of response to specific points.
I hate R4 for doing-in the SF.
Champion should have his own chat-show (preferably in Norton's current slot).
I am not a druid: neither do I initiate bodily contact with flora of any sort- that's more the Heir to the Throne's bag. Many Druids still exist, apparently. But I don't associate with whiffy tree-huggers.
I am an old fart, and have never disputed the fact.

Was that good for you?

It was formerly Trafalgar (north of Biscay), which was deemed too redolent of British triumphalism, apparently, probably by the same people* who object to 'Waterloo International'. Cannon Street is probably next, in case they're reminded of Crecy........
