A theory

Post by Pervert »

Probably wrong, but I seldom seem to see Steve and Holden on at the same time. Could it be that Holden was involved in some accident involving radioactive handlebars and now, when his Tourette's syndrome gets too much, he turns into the Incredible 56?

I'm also planning a novel about a charming, witty person who loses all sense of decorum after a few bottles of the Newcastle Brown Ale---Dr Jekyll And Mr Magoo.

Strictly speaking, it's an hypothesis.

No, to me it'd be a hypothesis (we Scots have no problems pronouncing our aitches---a hotel, a historical, but an honour), but thanks for putting me right, Mart.

No doubt Professor JJ will flame me for that. I care not a whit.

I'm afraid, Mart, that style-books like Fowler would back Carac- if the 'h' is normally unvoiced (as in 'honour') then the vowel-sound dictates that the indefinite article would be 'an', whereas voiced 'h' as in 'hypothesis' is preceded by 'a'.
Anyway, it's a theory, not a(n) hypothesis, so the point is moot.
And what does Caractacus know anyway, his native tongue ought to be Old English. Or Pictish.........

A hypothesis has to be tested a number of times before it can be elevated to the status of theory.

If you capitalise the two major nouns, yes.
But this is colloquialism, where scientific standards do not (necessarily) apply.
And strictly, the Hypothesis is subject to testing eternally, if one follows Popper- conditions may change or new information may be found, so we can never be certain that any Theory necessarily remains valid no matter how many times it has been challenged and still found to be a reasonable explanation for the observed facts.
