I'm sure he has steve56. I have, they are noisy buggers. Not at night though, unlike my neighbours. I'm too lazy to check whether they are native to NZ but we certainly have them down here.
They are difficult to spot although they only might be a few feet away.

A bit like grasshoppers , they feature in a lot of novels ( inc Ian Flemings James Bond,) set in the Carribean . You can hear them through the Jaloises ,

That must have been a US site you hit: cicadas are circumglobal, in tropical to temperate climates.
