Just got this album today and it totally rocks!
As good as his previous album, 5.
He's suddenly gone for a darker, grittier edge.
The first 2 tracks have to be heard to be believed -
Minister Of Rock N Roll
I Dont Want To Be A Star
The riffs are so damned funky.
The groove is right "there".
Play it in your car but play it loud.
In your walkman, walk with a funky bitch strut.
Hopefully there are some other guitar playing funksters out there in forum land.
Perhaps we can get permission to jam at the next BGAFD party....perhaps not.
Anyway, go check out the album.
I'll save the "structured flow" and "urban beat funk feel of angst" for the slags at Rolling Stone et al.

Don't say that!
Hendrix is so damned overrated.
As equally overblown as Jim Morrison and the like.
I've listened to a lot of his stuff and give or take the odd tune, I can't stand him.
Sure he plays with feeling, but that feeling doesn't necessarily mean it'll transcend to the listener.
Dave Gilmour does more for me with his Fender than Hendrix could do with 10.
Eddie Van Halen, Mark Knopfler, Yngwie Maalmsteen, Nils Lofgren & Steve Vai, do "feeling" a damned sight better.
Perhaps if they die in a shocking ball of fire, choke on their puke or crash into a tree, they'll become legends as well.
The closest I have heard a Hendrix style sound, has to be the early days of the skinny purple prick that is Prince. I'm thinking more late 70's early 80's.
He could make a guitar cry.
I bet you're gonna want to slate me for saying that but be fair now J, you have to have heard his early stuff to comment fairly.
Anyway, for me, Kravitz is the coolest cat in town.

Re: Lenny Kravitz - Baptism
Totally agree Holden
As Eric Clapton said Jimi is the governor BUT I think that only applies to performing live...the songs just don't stack up...foxy lady,watchtower...full of emotion but they don't come over that way on CD or vinly
Love Nils Lofgren...guitar,piano...the guy is a legend and yet unknown to the public...perfectly exampled by the fact that I only found his music after I bought his greatist hits in the 1990s...I bought it at a whim with no idea of who he was
The Best Greatist Hits i've ever bought....15 number ones in my book
and the beauty is that even as a great guitarist and piano player neither dominate any song as per normal
62.10 minutes/seconds of pure joy/sorrow
I've never heard a CD like it
Truly an artist at his peak
Mark Knofler is just a genius...pure class...Dire Straits wer a class above everybody else at the time....perfectly illustrated by telegraph road and twisting by the pooh
cheers
B....OZ
PS Yeah Dave Gilmour was brilliant on Dark Side of the Moon, A Delicate Sound of Thunder,A Collection of Dance Songs & parts of A Momentary lapse of Reason

Re: Lenny Kravitz - Baptism
I've got some early Lofgren on vinyl. Given to me by a burned out hippy who was jacked on Iron Butterfly.
Actually he was ex army and would snap my neck if he knew I called him a hippy.
The two tracks that made me pick up a guitar are Comfortably Numb (the Delicate Sound of Thunder version) & Sultans of Swing.
I was gutted when I realized it wasn't as easy as it looked.
Those two remain at the top of the pile of classics as far as I'm concerned.
The solo in Numb, Thunder version, is just so emotional. It never fails to amaze me or take me back to the old days of a mispent youth.
Knopler was seriously underated. Sultans solo is excellent. He just makes it look so easy.
How could I forget Clapton. Layla is my favourite track of his.
I have to give respect to blues legend Albert King & Ry Cooder.
Is it just me, or is there a serious lack of decent new guitarists?
Kudos is just given to the latest "In-thing", certainly no longevity in any of the new ones.
The guy that plays the guitar in Chris Isaaks' band is also a brilliant player.
Can't remember his name but he is pretty damned classy.

You forgot Layla.....piss on you
Funny you should mention it....Gryth Rhys Jones once sang it on a sketch
One of the best human guitasr I've heard-magoos got the video unless he's sold it
Comfortably Numb is in my mind Pink Floyds signature tune not Money
Most of Dire Straits is ignore dbeacuse it was slow IMHO
I'm of the opinion that slow playing shows your skill and gives the vocals and song a chance to shine
I never picked up a guitar(you should be eternally grateful) as I'm a cluts with my hands but if i did
It would be a toss up between
Boston..............Hitchhiker or More Than a feeling
Lynyrd Skynyrd free bird, sweet home alabama, call me breeze
Billy Squier.......THE STROKE

Re: Lenny Kravitz - Baptism
I was being a tad OTT there, but I deeply detested his early image-snatch from His H-ness. If he doesn't ring yer bell, then I guess he doesn't. How do you feel about Jan Akkerman, or John McLaughlin?
Knopfler and Lofgren I admire greatly (surely their legendary status isn't open to question?), Purple Pain diverted people's attention from how good a muso he actually is by all that buffoonery and weirdness.

Re: Lenny Kravitz - Baptism
jesus christ, have i stepped into some sort of parallel universe here where people think that hendrix was over rated, yet prince and lenny fucking kravitz are considered as great!?
i was physically sick yesterday after playing football for the first time in a year. i think i'm gonna be sick again after reading all those posts. no offense meant though.

Prince was great up until he started writing Slade on his face, or whatever.
BTW - does anyone know the collective noun for turkeys is? I need it for a Kravitz albums reply.
