Odd sayings

Post by Lizard »

"the pen is mightier than the sword"

unless the sword is already in yer back, whilst your trying to write the letter.

whats all that about then.

"too many cooks spoil the broth"....unless your not having broth, in which case an extra pair of hands might be useful.

The original version was 'sward', which as I'm sure you know is a patch of grass. Very soft stuff, grass.........and old-fashioned pens were nasty pointy scratchy things. Unless they originally meant a female swan, in which case the pen would be much much mightier than the sward, swans being such hefty chaps, much prone to throwing their weight around- ask maggs if you don't believe me. Much much worse than emus, say, or crested grebes.

Again, originally 'corks'. Apparently Henry VIII's head cook (being Welsh, and one-legged) used to make a gazpacho flavoured with corks (from the famous cork-oak groves of Extremadura, property of Henry's rival Ferdinand of Aragon), and a little aniseed. Yuk, hence the saying.

There's a lot of wisdom those old sayings, like, 'never look a giant horse in the mouth while throwing stones in mid-stream'.
Think on...........

Iss true, it's all in Brewer's Droop Book of Fact, Fable and Complete Lies.

And it's historical fact that Henry kept divorcing/beheading his wives because he had permament indigestion on account of all the bark he had been eating cooked by that Italian chef.
Hence the phrase 'his bark's worse than his bite', 'bite' being a Tudor word for the pomegranate.

I've never heard ANYONE say that, EVER: are you sure you didn't mishear? Or is it perhaps a peculiarly Northern expression? It's just silly.......
My favourites are 'I've been under the doctor' and 'I've been to the doctor, with me leg/arm/appendix/descending colon'.

What about when you tell someone something, and they say- oh! that old chestnut! wtf do chestnuts have to do with anything?.....
also " there,s nowt so queer as folk singers" thats a bit of a slur on our rural musicians, granted Morris Dancings a bit gaylord, but really!.....
