There was a story that when Peter Gabriel did his third album, he was told by an American promoter that it would do nothing Stateside. But the guy suggested an American-style guitar riff on the track And Through The Wire could garner a hit single. PG's response? Get Weller in to play guitar on the track.
Weller tended to get sneered at here because of his socialist conscience at a time when he raking in cash. But he's a great musician, and one of our best songwriters. Paradoxically, though, I think The Jam's best was not one they wrote, but the cover of David Watts.
