Hi Bimmer , I think the new common rail diesels will be desroyed by petrol , however you are correct that this is almost certainly the 1700 Isuzu diesel and should have survived . Any way , flush thorough and try again v new engine , gotta be worth a try.

Back to the subject for one thing.....it IS an Izuzu engine and YES, they're better than the vauxhall's own engine... but this is what the guy told me..(in case you're interested!)..
I was lucky that the fuel pump hadn't gone tits up.
Diesel is an oil based fuel and it lubes the pump, unleaded, on the other hand would cause the pump to seize through lack of lube, thus, overheat and seize.
The engine will have no damage to it....in the days before they put wax in the diesel, to stop it freezing in the winter, petrol was added to the diesel to combat the freezing problem, so apparently it's quite safe.
He said that the petrol would have cleaned all the shit from the pump and engine anyway and may even have done it some good! hope so!
As for the being "dopey" at the pumps bit....my nickname is actually Dopey in work, god knows why!
Ps (I fix military aircraft!!!) :o)

I have often wondered if there is a system to prevent the tanker driver making this error. From what you say, it would appear not.

done this myself.

filled up at sainburys in northampton, the pump did not have a green hose/filler. it was yellow so thought it was sulphur diesel.

got to loughbough, with a little lose of power.

but could not start it once i had stopped.

called out AA and they took me to have the tank pumped out and 10L of fresh diesel put in.

cost ?110, plus a full tank of fuel lost [almost], plus the refill.

luckely it was a robust citroen diesel, and even with more than 140000 miles, is running with no lost of performance, or anyother parts replaced.

an expensive day out.
