Re: Are the Olympics over yet?
You and me both
The reason...TOO MUCH SPORT all year round
The Olympics might have once been a Unifying Event once but now it is just a means to print Money for all those invovled
No doubt the media will highlight some remarkable stories like the Palestinian team who train in substandard conditions amongst the rubble etc but its purely lip service because after its over those substandard conditions will still be continuing worldwide IMHO
cheers
B....OZ
PS I might tune in just to see the Socceroos fall on their swords one more time

Re: Are the Olympics over yet?
Yes buttsie the Socceroos, complete with ex Rangers captain Craig Moore ... good riddance, hope he has a successful tournament as we might get some decent money for him, but take your points why do we need football in the olympics when we have just recently had the European Championships and the Copa d America just finishing 2 weeks before it starts, football is from grass roots to big time now totally professional and has no place being at the Olympics. Same can be said about most sports from basketball to badmington, the joy of watching somebody compete for olympic glory is tempered by the fact that a lot of these ?hopefuls? are well on their way to becoming millionaires, suppose the only joy is when somebody from a less privileged background comes up and upsets the apple cart.
PEOPLE think Stephen Hawking is so clever, but when you ask him a question and he is typing in the answer on his little screen, how do we know he isn't just looking up the answer on the Internet?

Re: Are the Olympics over yet?
I've said it before and I still believe it...team sports have no place at the Olympics
Most have their own World Championships so why the need to join the Olympics
Extra free exposure which inturn generates new interest and ultimately MONEY
Its very sad that individual sports have become so commercialised that they battle each other to get into the Olympics
The rot for mine started and peaked with the Dream Team in 1992
Legendary Superstars who stayed in a 5 star hotel rather than the Atheletes Village.
The fact that Governments around the world are prepared to pay cash for medals really highlights the prostitution that is taking place
Spain paid 1 Million(pesetas I assumed) to each of the Gold Medal Winners in Barcelona 1992
Australia paid AUS30,000 to Gold Medal Winners
All I can say is that with these pots of gold being handed out its little wonder some atheletes risk life & limb to win
cheers

PS A recent story of one of my fellow Adeladians highlights the absurdity of the Olympics which supposebly stands for peace & love....he's a good chance of winning a gold medal in the 48kg section in boxing for Australia but he's also out on bail, since April 2004 on the charge of violent home invasion being postponed till after the Olympics

Re: Are the Olympics over yet?
Re your PS---such hypocrisy is universal in sport. Tel Butcher was meant to be up on a charge with the FA over kicking in the referee's changing room door after disputing a few decisions. The trouble was, it was near the end of the season and just before the World Cup. So they postponed a decision until after the tournament, by which time Terry had joined the forces of darkness (Scottish branch) and was no longer under their jurisdiction.
Incidentally, it's nice to see that the club before country principle laid down by former Satanist in chief Souness (players must be injured for international matches but miraculously recovered to play for the Clockwork Orangemen by the next Saturday) is still in place at Ibrox. Whatever your opinions about football at the Olympics, representing your country used to be the peak of a footballer's career. Now it's looked upon as something that can interfere with his day job.

Perhaps they should introduce tank dodging as an Olympic sport to "Level The Playing Field!"

Re: Are the Olympics over yet?
If the countries really want the players then they should be paying their wages for the time they have them in camp and as most countries wouldn't be able to afford the superstars salaries it would pose an interesting dilemma for players that really want to make it to a World Cup,Euro Champioship or Copa whatever
The current system of saying to the clubs...release them or else is farcical IMO because as you point out injuries are used and abused to avoid international matches
Maybe its about time Fifa(if its solvent as sepptic blatter says)started compensating the clubs
The third option would be forget the World Cup all together
Given the fact that most of the big names have been burnt out by the time they have reached Euro 2004 & Seoul 2002 something has got to give
I've seen better Word Cups at U17 & U19/20 than many of the biggest
World Cups.
cheers

Agree Agree Agree. I get far more fun from watching the girls play netball at my local park. When its hot, they tuck their tiny skirts up into their knickers at the sides. MMMmmmm yeah baby. And these chicks are real chicks - not pumped so full of testosterone that they grow nuts !
Mind you, the opening ceromony at the local netball final doesn't quite match the Olympics. " Are we all here ?......OK lets start. "
