Nick Leeson isn't a bad man he just fucked up spectacularly. What he did was naive, stupid and caused huge amounts of grief but it can't be likened to murdering someone, it was "Only" money.
I'd argue that his superiors should have pulled him up on his wild behaviour long before he fucked up beyond the point of no return but they didn't. Silly bugger!

Self Preservation/Greed would have been his primary motivation
because if he had come clean his reputation and future in the industry would have been all but destroyed. He knew what he was doing
I beg to disagree about its ONLY MONEY.
Money is what makes the world tick and those handing it with the carrot & stick approach...IMF,World Bank etc...don't give a shit if millions are made unemployed or starving in the short term just as long as all the economic factors are met so they can make the loan payments
and we wonder why people turn to terrorism

Judging by the facts it would appear he was in control of everything with no watchdog of anykind
Yes but his superiors all have unreachable stretch targets but if they do meet them then its bonus time so they ride the dealers hard
which has nothing to do with sustainable returns but quick massive profit
As Warren Buffet said if you make a 25% return annually on your investment your doing well but these bank clowns seem to think 25% a year is laughable because they know better
A recent case with the once high flying National Australia Bank highlighted
that these practices are still happening...AUS370 million written off
4 dealers sacked...their immediate superior....a couple of board members and the managing director...sometimes big heads role but of course they would all have left with a nice little earner as is the executive way
cheers

"Which nationality's response to "vermin" do you prefer - is the good old-fashioned Germanic solution more to your liking?"
The German response no, the Tony Martin response yes.

Yeah, Tony Martin, top man. I reckon he deserves a knighthood, I trust the PM won't overlook him in this year's honours. 'Sir Tony of Purdy' has a kind of ring to it, don't ya' think?

no i agree it was self defence.

Strange how the Americans villified Robert Ford for shooting an unarmed robber in the back, while we praise one.

Re: Chavs strike again
Maybe on the surface thats true but anybody thats spent time on the inside
knows that a 71/2 year stretch even reduced for good behavior is HELL
No sentence could recompense a family for the death but then we have to decide what kind of a society we really want
Eye for an Eye or Punishment & Rehabiliatation
The choices are pretty stark and none leave a good feeling....you either Kill them/lock them up for life, stick with the current system or try properly funding prevention programs and I don't mean Welfare handouts
If you don't give those people that are down & out hope there is NONE for all of us IMO
cheers
