Apparently its a lot commoner than people want to admit. Its very brave of you to tell us steve56 but wouldn't you be better off going to your doctor about your premature ejection?

Had the same problem 6 times in 18 months compared to my first VCR bought in 1990......14 years no problems of anykind
A techy friend said its just the way they make them thesedays-cheap and nasty.
12 months trouble free playing is the best you can expect from a new VCR
cheers

Re: video problems.
Thats why they are so affordable as well. My very first VCR cost in excess of ?400, and that was BEFORE Nicam and Video-plus!!! That lasted years.
I have for, ahem, copying purposes, 2 x JVC models that I got re-conditioned at ?40 each, well worth it as they had 12 months guarantee. They both have stickers advertising France 98 World Cup, which shows their age........and not ONCE have I had a problem, whereas Im on my 2nd brand new Toshiba VCR in 3 years.

I paid AUS500-00 for the Akai in 1990 and $AUS339-00 for the JVC in 2001
so price wise not a lot of difference
Luck of the draw it would seem or their really is a difference between one brand and another
I wonder which Manufacturer is the Volvo of the VCR World?
cheers

Re: video problems.
and stear clear of Phillips vcr?s possibly the worst videos ever, don?t get me wrong for ease of use and set up, simple, but after that, build quality and picture quality are pretty shit, suppose everybody has their favourite trusty machine, mine would have to be my Hitachi which lasted for years with no problems and picture quality was superb, unfortunately I bought it in a package with an Hitachi Widescreen Television which was total shit, it kept switching itself off with the slightest touch from any remote control, if the kettle boiled it was enough static to turn the fucker off.
PEOPLE think Stephen Hawking is so clever, but when you ask him a question and he is typing in the answer on his little screen, how do we know he isn't just looking up the answer on the Internet?
Re: video problems.
Harking back to the old days, are any of you old enough to remember what a fiddle it could be to get a decent TV picture?
And why were the controls at the back rather than the front? It was always a 2 person job, one to twiddle those fiddly little knobs and one to report on the picture.
