Good. Let me know when I need to apply for a visiting order so I can bring him some apple crumble!

Ouch! Eight large! I thought the Golf diesel was supposed to be good? I know a bloke who swears by his. When I'm in "Sensible" car mode this is the first car that springs to mind as a good buy.
Talking of Japanese cars it's incredible how they've come on in leaps and bounds over the last decade or so. The old Toyotas, Mazdas etc were pretty dismal but look at them now! I reckon they are the best quality cars out there, I've had five Toyotas now and not had a hint of a problem with any of them. Even the gorgeous Celica 190 that I had for a while was pretty affordable to run. If I ever get a decent no-claims bonus built up again I'd have another like a shot.

Ace's first ever car was a L reg Vauxhall Viva!!!! in pale blue. An excellent first car. I then discovered Ford Capri's and went from a 1.6 GL to 2.8 Laser in 4 years. Hated their (2.8 laser) poxy vinyl roofs. When it rained, it REALLY sounded terrible when driving.
Discovered Peugeot 309's in 1986 and they were great.

An Oyster Gold Mk2 Escort, 1978 on an S. It may have only been a 1.1 but it had only done 18K, not bad for a 13 yr old
I've still got it, albeit it's not been on the road for 10 years, I'll get round to doing it up one day.... trouble is nice cars keep finding me and I've been distracted. I currently have 11 mk2's (some of them right gems) including a fabulous black 77 RS2000, plus various other Capri's, Opels, Datsuns and a P6 Rover 3500. I've still got the 93 Rover Metro I bought new when I was 19, and unbelievably it's still rust-free

Old BMW's are great cars. I've had a 92 E34 520iSE for 6 years and it's still superb (it has only covered 72K though, which is nothing on a car like that). It excells on the motorways, 120 mph feels like 70, absolutley effortless, and it would do it all day long.
