anti heroes?
what does this actually mean ive often seen it when describing old tv shows eg public eye etc.

An anti-hero, as defined by latest UK Gov guideline, is someone who manages to be popular and wins the girl/defeats the bad guy while still somehow not completely aligning with the latest health and safety dogma (e.g. the person might smoke, drink, fox-hunt, not have any loveable ethnic children, not have a puppy, not recycle, is pro-nuclear power, etc., etc.).
For a contemporary movie reference, take a look at Riddick (as played by Vin Diesel) in Pitch Black and the upcoming Chronicles of Riddick (although his character has been so blanded down as to be nearly unrecognisable).
Sticking with movies, take a look at for a list of some recent movie anti-heroes.
I'm sure there are characters from literature, Greek and Roman mythology and even classical music, but my education unfortunately does not extend that far
