internet fraud

Post by diplodocus »

today I got one of those emails pretending to be from the bank asking me to access a website and re-enter my details. Yeah right!

Does anyone know of any way to report these sites so they can be closed down or prosecuted before some poor bugger gets taken in by one?

we are Leeds.... , and we can still beat the mighty Chester

I recently got 'done' on ebay.......sent ?170 and never recieved anything. The seller assured me it was posted, but hey presto!! No proof OR reciept of insurance that I paid extra for.
Police response? 'Internet Fraud isn't something they follow up', leaving 'sellers' out there to make a small fortune from cunts like me. Oh, and it was a PO Box Number so I can't travel to Wiltshire 'for a chat'

If you call Royal Mail they are obligated to tell you the home / business address of the owner of the PO Box

Forward it to the bank in question - no one else seems to care but they will do whats needs to be done to get the site taken down or at the very least to take steps to protect their customers

I listened to a radio programme about file sharing. It said that you are at risk by allowing access to your computer.
Is this true?

Industry opinion is very divided!

My personal view is that you are opening up your computer to anyone using the same P2P software and allowing them to access your computer and therefore it has be less secure than not doing it so I would advise that you dont.

Its fair to say that the file sharing software will have security features and safeguards built in but by giving other file sharers access you are taking away one layer of security which just makes it that bit easier for someone to gain access to your whole system.

You need a dedicated folder for file sharing, and one only, I have seen whole C:/ drives, with all sorts in them, because people change the recommended folder to store thier shares in, you can do this by clicking on 'find other files from this user' it amazes me, peoples Cv,s, recipes for rice pudding, the lot!!!

Thanks for that Jay, Royal Mail have been very helpful, but it appears the PO Box is now closed and the return address is vacated.
