Musicology is fairly weak, with the praise it's received being purely comparative. It's a bit like when they say Woody Allen's back on form because his new film contains two jokes instead of the usual one.
Money Don't Matter 2 Nite was his last decent song really - Alphabet Street the last true classic. Sadly the likes Gett Off and My Name is Prince head straight into self-parody, and he's done nothing but test people's patience ever since. Shame.

In lieu of this thread, I watched Sign O The Times video this afternoon, fucking hell, it is still brilliant 15+ years on.
That Cat sure can dance, and Shiela E really batters those drums.
New Power Generation were good, as were his Purple Rain era band, but this line up with Atlanta Bliss and Eric Leeds on the brass section, and Dr Fink on the keyboards were the best IMO

The sign of a great of a great artist is in the compiling of best of's, and even the comprehensive 1992 "Hits/B-sides" triple cd has glaring ommsions, so much that I have had to make my own.
A lot of of his pre-Purple Rain stuff is great disco-funk, Purple Rain itself is more than he some of it's parts, Around The World In A Day and Parade have some great singles and some great (but stranger) tracks. Sign "O" The Times is superb, LoveSexy is a pretty strong work. I always rated the Batman album too, the songs work within the film and on their own merits (this album is always overlooked, but it it contains some great darker moments as well as hits ("Partyman"). Graffiti Bridge ost is a decent album, not his best but certainly no disgrace, and Diamonds & Pearls is a strong collection.. The stuff he's done since 92 isn't bad but it's not been as consistantly good, but is that a reasonable demand given his 1980-1991 output??
