Max Geldray was the harmonica player in the Goon shows musical slot.

Ray Ellington led the Jazz band that took the other musical slot in
the Goons.

I think they were there because in the days of 1950s radio comedy
most shows were made up of comedy skteches and the music gave
breaks between the sketches ("Take it from here" with the Glums for
example).

Also most radio comedy shows had a live band in the studio so it also
gave them something extra to do rather than provide background
music.

Ray Ellington is dead, Max Geldray moved to the USA and is still alive
see .

Thanks Guilbert.
Things that one never questioned at the time can seem strange when you revisit them.
Like Peter Brough and Archie Andrews. A ventriloquist act...on radio????

Comedy on BBC7

Post by Guilbert »

If you listen to BBC7 you can hear lots of old comedy.

It is available to listen to on the internet here

It is also available on Freeview.

You can also 'listen again' to comedy they have aired
if you have Real Player.

Today they have Clitheroe kid, and shows with Barry
Cryer and Spike Milligan, plus the history of radio comedy
with Russell Davies.

They also play Round the Horne, I am sorry Ill read that
again, Men from Minestry, Navy Lark and so on.
