The fossil fuel industries answer to Global Warming
I don't know about you but having Carbon dioxide pumped into the Earths Crust & Deep Oceans does seem slighlty dangerous & short sighted
If all goes badly we might even create the Big bang

Sequestration-Nightmare or Solution?
Re: Sequestration-Nightmare or Solution?
The NZ Government is at last considering a radical, if obvious, approach to the problem of ever increasing demands for energy. Rather than going on attempting to generate more and more, there will be a serious attempt to consume less. New building regulations will ensure that new houses have much higher degrees of insulation and even, possibly, incorporate solar heating.

Re: Sequestration-Nightmare or Solution?
Their all band aid solutions because new dwellings will always be just a fraction in the overall scheme of things
Our South Australian Government went through the process of building the Green Friendly city for the 21st century in a project called the Multi-Function Polis 1987-97...nothing ever came of it just a huge money drain for so called experts or was it?
Still remains one of SAs costliest jokes
down the bottom
The funny thing is that the technology is out there but the Politicians have no resolve when confonted by Lobbyists from the fossil fuel industry
If you ever build your own home build the walls out of straw/mud-best insulation & soundproof to boot.....
cheers

Re: Sequestration-Nightmare or Solution?
This theory has been around for a while, and whilst a lot of the science is sound I have some serious doubts about the practicalities. The main one being that the CO2 will always try to revert to being a gas, so eventually it will end up in the atmosphere, trying to store it underground would be very difficult as the earth's crust isn't exactly stable, look at how much gas gets pumped out of coal mines. As for turning it into a solid, it would be good to see a life cycle analysis of how much energy is required to do this.
I think Mart is right, the only way to address the issue is to use less, the problem being until the States get their ass in gear we are just papering over cracks

Re: Sequestration-Nightmare or Solution?
Every little helps Deuce. There's the scheme called One in Ten (I think) which encourages firms to do the equivalent of switching off 1 in 10 of its lights. What amazes me is that people don't see the economic argument for using less energy. The less you use, the less you pay.

I work in the pollution control industry for a global company, I have lots of idea.
This problem is only going to be addressed if everyone signs up to doing something. The US refusal to accept the science is only delaying the inevietable.
Yes some counties environmental records are dodgy but these counties use a fraction of the energy of the Western world, everyone else is prepared to do their bit, why not the US

In a word Kyoto....a simple agreement to reduce greenhouse gases over time
The 2 biggest polluters(per capita) in the World(USA & Australia) refused to sign on because it wouldn't win any Votes IMHO
As for cleaner cheaper fuels
Again they are well known but just as any serious monetary help to green alternative energies are stamped in Goverment
Just to preserve the jobs in the fossil fuel industry-MONEY TALKS
Some say Politics is about making laws I say its about 2 things
Getting Elected and getting re-elected which means not treading on the toes of those with Political Clout-The Lobbyists
cheers

Re: Sequestration-Nightmare or Solution?
True but just as with old cars houses/offices built in the old ways will continue to rely on coal fuelled electricity so the only real solution is at the power source
I agree that reducing energy but the bulk of it has got to come from the commercial side
Residentially the practice of running air conditioners all day long while at work has got to stop but how do you Police it?
cheers
