Doctors playing God
There have been a few of these over the last few weeks and months, do you think that doctors (and courts I guess) should have the right to play God and decide, in effect, when someone should die??
Personally I think that doctors have a moral and professional responsibility to maintain life wherever possible - no one knows what advances in medicine are around the corner or what miracles could happen so I think its wrong for them not to try at the very least.

Re: Doctors playing God
Little Luke in the latest case is terminally ill. He's beaten the odds to survive so far, and I was moved by his mother's submission to the court and can understand why she wants him to be kept alive for as long as possible. But given the pain and suffering he faces on a daily basis, I believe he should not be resuscitated by heroic means if he should die.
Playing God? Maybe---but I wouldn't want to have to make such a decision, and then go home and live my normal life as if nothing unusual had happened.

I personally think they should do all they can to save anyone. If they are given the choice, I am sure the majority would, and cannot understand why this dilemma should ever get to court.
What really fucks me off is the piss-heads and brawlers at any A&E taking up doctors and nurses valuable time with getting stitched up after fighting or their stomachs pumped after waaay too much alcohol. This is where doctors should refuse treatment

Re: Doctors playing God
Surely taking the piss is ALWAYS an option?
Isn't that how we cope with death, destruction and general mayhem of 21st century life?

Re: Doctors playing God
...my reading of the Oath (which many doctors so often seem conveniently to disregard) is that thenir duty is to preserve the QUALITY rather than the extent of human life......in which event here is an arguable case for termination in certain circumstances.
