I suspect it goes on in every army everywhere, but is kept quiet due to problems it might cause with morale---not to mention recruitment.

Its primal MACHO bonding behaviour which revolves around the initiate submitting to being humiliated in front of the group

It occurs anywhere you find Working Class Males not just in the 3 Armed Forces

The horror stories you hear of apprentices basically being tortured so as to become part of the group are numerous

Trouble is being set on fire while tired up is a little bit more than being humiliated as happened to an apprentice mechanic a few years ago

And in the NFL.

There was a story a few years ago when a couple of rookie (US) football players were hazed at a pre season training camp by there seniors.

One of the victims complained and I believe got sacked for being a whinger.

Did see a story about him taking his club and the NFL to court but don't know what happened about it.
