It's not whether or not they have the chance, but the fact that we can vote for them, or the Nationalists, Communists, far right groups or Greens, should we wish. It would take a major shift in British opinion to give anyone but Labour or the Tories the chance to form a government, but the opportunity exists. In the US, without the backing of a national party, it's a struggle for a third candidate to stand for the presidency. Nader, and Ross Perot before him, struggles to get on the voting form in every state.

Proportional representation is the only system that ensures your vote(s) counts for something. Yes, it leads to coalition governments and consensus politics, but all shades of opinion have their say.

In a two-party system, quite often a vote goes to one candidate because you don't like the other one, or their policies. A country that is touted as the greatest democracy deserves better, don't you think.
