You are paying to live in one of the worlds top economies, the only way round this is to emigrate to Chad!

Emigrate to Chard (somerset) instead.

Actually Chad's probably safer.

houses aint that cheap in some other countries, Holland for example is bloody costly, and don't even think about Tokyo

A lot of these comparisons are tricky.
House prices in NZ are much lower than in the UK but wages are much lower. Another factor is the rate of exchange. When I was last here (2002) I was getting NZ$3.4 to the GBP. By the time I had got residency and moved (2003) the rate was 2.6. That change means a lot of money when you've sold your UK house and transferred the funds.
