Afternoon folks!
Anybody up on this latest government bollocks that any electrical DIY work in your OWN home has to be checked by the local authority?? What excatly does it mean?
Ok, the very short article on the radio yesterday did say that this was for larger jobs, but exactly what does that mean? I know some people who can't change a bloody fuse, so that's a big job for them, whereas many a very competent DIYer can rewire a whole house with no worries.
And will we still be able to put up Crimbo tree lights?
Are we going the same way with electric as things are with gas... ie we have to pay exorbitant rates for rip off 'specialists' to do simple jobs aabout the home?
The CORGI thing is barking, and this latest electrical red tape is shocking.
And let the argument run.....
Are DIY motor mechanics be banned soon?...or will you have to get your brakes checked at a MOT station after you've fitted new pads? Or having pumped up a tyre will we have to go Kwik Fit for them to assess the pressure.
This bastard Labour government is getting worse.
Off to the pub to dream all misty eyed of the good old day of Mrs T.
Sid
ps....Note to my old Pal!!! Very well thanks. Except for the above moan that is...
DIY electrics.
Re: DIY electrics.
I agree its shocking. They will have to impose a limit on what can be done safely, and at the same time, regulate the cowboys out there.
As for CORGI.......that is an excellent body, and certainly DID rid the industry of cowboys who endangered lives with their botched work.

Re: DIY electrics.
It's not the tree the gov are interested about...what of all the people that light up OUTSIDE the house at Xmas time...special squad cars are coming around asking if you have a permit...
Mark you,I see Mr.Bloggs has tapped into that street light again, perhaps a good thing after all.

The above comment coming from somebody who with a little more knowledge can become a CORGI registered installer
Re: DIY electrics.
Just seen a post on another forum from a girl who has to sit in darkness until tomorrow, when the college will send round a qualified electrician to change her blown lightbulb.
We have need of you again, great king.

Student's light bulb
it's getting silly, peter, and I'm sure you post was put there the 'illuminate' the point. Don;'t wan;t to get tooo daft here, but students are I feel getting 'dimmer'... cultural studies with paving slab design.... etc...
It's bloody crackers!!!
Can we change a fuse/can;t we??
What about all those lovely new sockets you can buy at B&Q.... cost a chufin' fortune to fit after next Jan.
Never mind. With all those out of work huntsmen about the place it should be easy to get an electrician to sort things out!! Nice dogs on the cheap too!
Fat bastard Prescott is behind this one i gather. Changing the colour of wire in elecrtic circuits too..... to match up with ... you'e guessed it.... Europe.
Sooner the Rt Hon Tony Blurr takes after that other popular 'socialist' AND catholic John F. Kennedy and leaves office mid term the better!!!

Re: DIY electrics.
Found this link to the IEE site. Think it covers it all.
Re: Student's light bulb
I suggested she "accidently" trip over something in the darkness, and sue for some nice compo.

Re: Student's light bulb
I think the original point was she'd told whoever she'd reported it to "nevermind, i'll do it myself" only to be warned not to due to 'health & safety' requirements.

Re: DIY electrics.
An example of why we need this.
A friend of mine (who works with me in computers so is not stupid)
decided to put a shower unit in his bathroom.
Did he read up on what to do. Did he give the shower unit its
own cable and fuse. Did he provide an isolating switch just
outside the bathroom.
No, he just wired it straight into his ring main.
One day his daughter had just finished her shower when she
saw smoke coming out the wiring.
Luckily it was easily put out, and did not set fire to the house.
He claimed on the insurance ! and got it all replaced.
