Favourite Operas of all time

Post by Cate »

My top 3 Operas are

(1) "Peter Grimes" By Benjamin Britten, Tragedy strikes a Cornish Fisherman.

(2) "Bluebeards Castle" by Bela Bartok, The opening of Forbidden Doors leads to tragic secrets.

(3) "Lady Macbeth Of Mtensk" Dmitri Shostakovich. A tale of greed passion and brutality.

Any one else into Opera like to share their favourites with the group.

Cate.

Nah, none of those cate. They havn't got any good tunes you can whistle.

Was it Edward VII or George V, who on being asked during a visit to Covent Garden (the Opera House or maybe it was the Market) what were his favourite operas, replied Cav and Pag. His reason, they were the shortest.

Careful, you'll get Holden all excited again.

I would nominate the Marx Brothers' A Night At The Opera, but it's got too much music for my taste.

Good call Caractacus. I like opera but its hard to take it seriously when you think of that classic piss-take.

My favourites are Carmen, Aida, The Tales of Hoffman and any of Puccini's better known works (Turandot, La Boheme, Tosca, Madame Butterfly...)
