No surprise to me that the UN are under investigation for corruption, this has yet to be proved but as they say there is no smoke without fire. The Oil For food programme seems to have been abused and certain members have become rich with backhanders, Kofi Annan is under increasing pressure to divulge information on the scandal, only his ego and his arrogance stops him, the UN have blocked all attempts at letting people look at the books and the accounts from that Policy.
Kofi Annan was given a standing ovation last week by certian countries, members mainly French and German delegates, strange were these not the Countries involed in the Oil For Food Programme, they seem awfully keen for Kofi Annan to stay on at the UN despite growing concern over this scandal.
Hypocrisy at it's highest, if it is proved that the UN under Kofi Annan has skimmed funds from this Vital Programme then Kofi Annan should be charged and the UN need to look at thier own role, and the nations they included, were are not talking millions they are talking Billions of Pounds of money unaccounted for, the UN are being so tight lipped wonder why.

Re: Double dealings at the UN
Wasn't Anan's son implicated in wrong doingsa few months ago?
I'm sure both father & son were being exposed for corruption but then all of a sudden and rather miraculously, the press attention went to something far more important, namely "Are Jordan & Andrex fucking in the bushes."
Anan live's off of this high & mighty statesman act and thinks that the world loves him.
Hypocritical bastard.

"this has yet to be proved but as they say there is no smoke without fire."
Looks like all of Michael Moore's accusations against George Bush are true - after all, there's no smoke without fire.
"Kofi Annan was given a standing ovation last week by certian countries, members mainly French and German delegates,"
What?? Did the French and German delegates stand up really tall and clap louder than the rest?
Lets look at a few of quotes
"You have just received a rare and exceptionally warm tribute by the General Assembly," assembly president Jean Ping of Gabon told the gathering after Annan's speech.
This long standing ovation is an expression of the support of member states to your action, and the trust member states have in you as a person for the work that you continue to undertake at the helm of the United Nations," he said."
and
"U.S. deputy ambassador Patrick Kennedy joined fellow diplomats as they rose to their feet Wednesday"
and
"The unequivocal support from U.S. Ambassador John Danforth, who said he was speaking on behalf of the Bush administration, aligned the United States with the 190 other members of the United Nations who rallied to support the beleaguered Annan."
"Hypocrisy at it's highest" - Not really, misrepresenting a story and then trying to draw conclusions of hypocrisy and corruption from this misrepresentation is a waste of time.
I have no idea how corrupt the UN has been in this "scandal" or if Annan is involved - but I'm prepared to wait for the results of ongoing investigations to be published rather than assume that the accusations made by some US senators are undoubted fact.

Prepared to wait, it will be a long wait with the UN being some what elusive about the matter, even Annan made jokes about the scandal to the warm applause of certian countries, I agree lets wait and wait and wait.

Yes Cate. Lets wait.
Did you read that George Galloway won his libel action against the Daily Torygraph. He had been accused of being in Saddam Hussein's pocket.

Well when you travel to see a dictator shake his hand and then tell him he admires him and thinks hes a good leader, then I guess you leave yourself open to all kinds of accusations, even though Saddam was not an elected President. Most of the Elected Officials where killed when Sadam's Men marched them out in the street from the Parliament Building and shot them as an example of course. Then Sadam looks at Parlaiment and says any Objections.
I personaly would question my Morals if I treated Sadam with he respect of a president when very clearly he is nothing more than a Butcher, A decision Like Mr Galloway's lives long in the Memory of most people, and even though I dont like the Man I dont agree with what the paper wrote about him, but as I said when you affilaite yourself with that kind of Evil it sticks.

It was a hollow victory for Georgeous Goerge anyway, his mainstream political life is over, I personally find the sight of politicians sucking up to Dictators, repellent, as does most of the country I guess, Saddam was one big mean fuck, as were his sons, wether you believed in the war or not, we are well rid of the twat.......meanwhile george still has his villa in the sun.

Kinda like the golden handshake picture between Cheney & Hussein...or was it Rumsfeld now.
Either way, it's shit.
Jack Straw shaking hands with Mugabwe and then saying, "I didn't realise it was him as it was dark."...uh huh

Re: Double dealings at the UN
Galloway's political aspirations were well and truly stuffed over a decade ago. He likes to be seen as many things to people: a maverick, a voice of the people, a spokesman for tolerance and a power for good. Sadly, all the world tends to see is a tanned would-be playboy with a tache a 70s porn star would be ashamed of, a political opportunist, and an embarrassment to Dundonians everywhere (and that's saying something!).
