No-one questioned Columbus about the usefulness. It was a money-making scheme that would have paid off handsomely if the dipstick theory about the size of the globe he subscribed to had turned out to be correct.

Coming a cropper is not the same as going the Venus way. We'd all be dead long before we got past the point of no return towards the Venus scenario. Bankrupt and incapable of doing more damage even before that
