Great players do NOT always make great managers, funnily enough, bog-standard players make great managers if you look at Sam Allardyce, Jose Mourinho and Alex Ferguson......all 'reasonable' players at best.
I think Roy Keane will excel in management, but him aside, not many out there that can cut the mustard. I thought Tony Adams would have been good, but he was shite. Buttsie is right about Shearer, he will fail too

Ace/Buttsie you are right. The sad thing is it 'Only' matters to the fans. These guys in management get salaries and termination payments so large the earn in a year what most of us take 8 to earn and then get 6-12 months salary to go. Talk about failure is it's own reward

Star Players are best used in what they excelled Technique/Playing Skills
So Shearer if he's to have any role at Newcastle after playing should only be taken on as a specialist coach for the strikers in the squad IMHO
Being a Manager in the Premiership is more about massaging EGOs
with an eye towards totoal team cohesion
I wonder how Souness is handling the Dyer/Bowyer love fest?

So yet another season goes by without Alan Shearer winning anything. I bet he really regrets not joining Manchester United when he had the chance.
The thing that makes me laugh and leaves me puzzled is when commentators and journalists describe Shearer?s career as ?distinguished? or ?illustrious?. I would hardly call one championship medal, 10 years ago, and a less-than-one-goal-every-other-game for England as an illustrious or distinguished career. If so, what would one call the careers of the older Manchester United players or the likes of Zinedine Zidane or Thierry Henry and Patrick Vierra?
As for staying for another season to break Jackie Milburn?s record, I can?t see anything to write home about there either. It?s all totally irrelevant if you don?t win your club anything. Anyway, if you want to be pedantic Milburn?s record still carries more clout because at least he won things with Newcastle and still scored over 200 goals without the luxury of having the two extra tournaments (European and League Cup competitions) that Shearer has had.

Considering what a so called star he has been he has virtually fuck all in his trophy cabinet. Compare it to lesser players such as the Nevilles at Man U. He is rich in cash but very poor in the medal stakes. Thing is NUFC could still sell his turds in the club shop for ?100 a kilo!
