antivirus

Post by nachovx »

I used to run norton av and on occasions it warned me a virus had been detected on a web site and prevented it from getting onto my pc.

But since using avg free, I never get these type of warnings. Until today it had never detected amything - then all of a sudden when I'm not even browsing the net, up pops a box displaying 'virus detected in temp internet cache'

Two things bother me:

1 why didn't it actually stop the virus getting there in the first place - and seeing it was there, has it actually done anything? I'm running Trend Housecall now just to see

2 the popup window disappears after about 10 seconds - and leaves the virus there as the default - if your back was turned for 30 seconds you'd miss the fact it had ever reported and the virus would still be there

I gave up Norton because it was such a hassle getting updates. AVG is a bit quirky but its never let me get a serious virus infection. It usually picks up a virus before it gets into my system and the only ones it has missed have been usually spotted during the daily scan. Its failed to clean or quarantine a few but I've always managed to get rid of them by other means.
Deuce has pointed out that sometimes you can get false-positives.

Its free and its full of flaws from the updating system to the non-blocking & detection but unless you've got important stuff on your computer its OK

Avast might be a better bet but my own personal view is the best anti-virus programs are the ones you pay for

Theres some worthwhile feedback here about virus scanners

Theres an anti-virus thread raging right here which is as inconclusive as any
you'll find on the net.Good & bad experiences with all of them

The one thing that AVG seems to have over its rivals is that it doesn't use as much CPU when running

The best bet is try and avoid websites where crap resides

IE-Spyad blocks thousands of these known sites, reducing your risk of ever encountering a virus while surfing
