Can anyone recommend a PAYG phone company in the UK (except O2 as coverage is non existant here) who I dont have to register the phone with and I can just turn the phone on, use a scratch voucher and go? Bought an orange sim and top up voucher as I have an old orange phone here but you have to register and for reasons of anonymity I dont want to have the phone / phone number traceable back to me
Thanks
Jay

Re: Mobile phones
I bought a Virgin phone at Argos and gave no name/address etc - just pay in cash. I never bothered registering the phone and can top it up with vouchers no problem.

Re: Mobile phones
I thought thats how they all worked (or certainly used to) but with orange it appears that the sim has to be activated by their call centre which involves giving your name, address, home phone number etc etc which I dont want to do.
I will have a look at virgin now - did you buy just a sim pack / card and use it in an existing phone or did you buy a sim and a new phone?
Thanks
Jay

Re: Mobile phones
So I think the moral of the story for anyone else listening out there is - dont buy Orange if you want anonymity!!

Re: Mobile phones
Now here?s a strange one.
I?m sure there is a cellular boffin out there with all the info but due to all the Black Market stuff taking place using non registered mobile phones and I?m talking about the car booters and their copied DVDRs and that bloke down the centre selling gear to sniff up your nose, non registered mobiles are being turned off. I have a few sims which I use my bank card on line to top up and I always keep them with at least ten quid in credit. Well last month my Vodafone sim showed no service and when I called the nice people at Vodafone the switchboard personette told me that they were turning off un registered numbers to comply with government guidelines. So I registered the number and now it works. Personally I?m with Orange because they are nice people with a nice colour!

I bought a cheap Vodaphone pay as you go whilst i was waiting for a new pay monthly model to come out from Dixons a couple of months ago. They wanted my address before selling the phone to me.

Re: Mobile phones
The sim I got was inside the box with the phone - I activated it using the phone itself, so I never gave them my name/address or home phone number. Don't know if they've altered the system since then, but my phone still works ik.
Re: Mobile phones
Please correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that you can buy a PAYG sim card and put it in your phone and use it.
However if you want to make any calls (and put credit on the phone) then you have to register it. Hence you can use it for incoming calls but not outgoing unless it is registered.
Why not give a phoney address. A lot of people do and how can they trace that?
