As I said, renovation, unless it,s major, ie-: a large conservatory, "certain extentions" may increase the value, but the way our economy is set up, you could spend ?35k on an extention, then the housing market dips, and the house that should have been worth say! ?250,000 plus the cost of the extension, is now only worth ?225,000, result misery.
A lick of paint always helps to 'sell' a house but wont add to it,s value, then there,s the question of whether your folks want you to do any work while they are living in thier house.
