A Leeds student is the first in Britain to get a degree in chav culture.

Verity Jennings, 22, wrote a media studies thesis covering the likes of Lotto lout Michael Carroll, reports the Sun.

Her research also examined the 'chav-istocracy' that includes Danniella Westbrook and Victoria Beckham.

Verity said "I decided on the topic because it was the buzz word of the moment.

"It was a fascinating subject. I knew nothing about it at the beginning - I'm not a Chav myself."

Verity, of Droitwich, Worcs, gained a 2.1 in her course at Leeds Metropolitan University.

Her thesis was entitled: 'Chav, sub-culture or chavaphobia? An empirical and theoretical exploration of chav'.

It declared they were 'the new mods, rockers, and punks of the post-war generation'.

Sorry (not really) to be pedantic. She didn't get a degree in 'chav'-ology. Her final thesis was on that topic.

Never let the facts get in the way of a good story.

There's a story like this every few months, about a "Degree in David Beckham" or something. It turns out that at best a module on a sports course is about branding in sport which focusses on David Beckham.

If someone does an English Literature degree and writes an essay about Children's Books does that mean they have a degree in Spot The Dog? No, of course not, but it's a good story for the papers and I don't sippose the universities mind the exposure.
