Back in the old days you used to be able to sell without having to provide everything apart from a fingerprint and a blood sample. Now they insist on all this guff to prevent fraud. Which is bollocks obviously, but it's their excuse for collecting loads of financial and personal data on their customers.

Because not everyone who uses ebay is as honest as you, Steve. Some shitface bastard managed to sell some T In The Park tickets last year to dozens of people, none of whom got the tickets. So long as touts, conmen and criminals can use the site, while ebay just shrugs its shoulders and says "Not my fault," the ordinary punter is at risk. Moral or political pressure is being applied at long last, so the people behind ebay are now looking at safeguards.

Caveat emptor (let the buyer beware) was never so applicable as when dealing on ebay.

I registered with ebay a couple of weeks a go and I didn't have to give my bank/debit card details.

I maybe wrong here as I'm no ebay expert but I think they only ask you for your bank details when registering if you are using a free web based email address.

I used my ISP email address and that I believe is okay for them.

No doubt if I am wrong then someone will put me straight.

If your registering yourself as a seller on eBay they need to have bank details so you can pay the various charges they make for you to list your item. If your only using eBay to buy then there's no need to give them anything except your name, address and email.

If you want to buy you can register using a croeso.com email and avoid all the info, if you want to seel you need a credit card and bank number, although you can enter any old crap for the bank account and it takes a few days for them to catch on. er so i would imagine...
