. . . . and leaving aside the political side of today's concert.
Didn't see it all, obviously, but was impressed with The Killers, The Scissor Sisters, Annie Lennox, Keane, Snow Patrol and Madonna, among others.
Could have done without Snoop Dog, Slash's band.
Not a fan of Robbie William or Joss Stone, but both got the crowd going.
Worth waiting for Pink Floyd---and Roger Waters seemed quite delighted to be taking part. Has to be said, though, that they make The Rolling Stones look young.
Hope someone was keeping an eye on Pete Townshend during the finale, with all those kids running round. (Sorry, cheap shot).
Amazed to find that Macartney still knows how to rock. Charlie Manson's theme tune Helter Skelter, no less.
Unimpressed by Mariah Carey. Whereas Lennox and Madonna know how to work with people, she came across as condescending with those kids.
Moment of the day----Peter Kay asking Joss Stone how old she was when she sold her soul to Satan.
Not perfect, by an means, but not as much dross as Live Aid had (Adam Ant, Status Quo, Howard Jones, Nik Kershaw, 70% of the Philly acts, yes I do mean you).

Re: Music only
Wow, one hell of a gig. Personally I thought U2 kicked ass but the first act to really blow me away was.....Robbie Williams! My God can this guy rock, he fucking smoked!! I was dreading him coming on but I've got to admit he made me eat my words. I stand corrected!
The Who were awesome, like a fucking juggernaut out of control. Townshend was off the scale, blinding.
But...Pink Floyd. Oh Jesus, it was beautiful! Hell frozen over for a fleeting glimpse of one of the most incredible bands in the history of rock'n'roll. If there has ever been a more accomplished musician than David Gilmour then I've never heard them. They were PERFECT.

Re: Music only
From where I was sitting only Floyd and Velvet Revolver had actually got their act together. Neither wasted much time on congratulations/platitudes etc. and just got on with the job.
Yes, a good Helter Skelter from The Fireman - but the finale was an utter wash-out.

I'd like to be able to stand up for the music of my youth - Live Aid, but have to admit that the Live8 gig was a much better show.
Although there were people there who I don't particularly like - Robbie Williams, Madonna, Snoop Dog, Joss Stone - I don't think that you could say that any of them gave bad performances. Whilst there were some shockers at Live Aid - from the ones you mention but also people like Bowie and the Who weren't great then - but the Who were very good last night.
Downsides - only one song from the Killers, the BBC showing an interview with pompous arse George Michael rather than letting us see Peter Kay entertaining the crowd by taking the piss out of the "Charlie Drake" roadie - and that idiot Pete Doherty, but at least he's a good advert to show kids what'll happen if you take too many drugs.
One thing Live Aid did have, going back to politics, was a very simple messsage - give money to buy food to stop these people from starving now. Live8's message was difficult to define and far more open to interpretation.

Re: Music only
Gilmour didn't seem too thrilled with Waters' efforts though did he? The only time he smiled seemed to be aimed at Mason and as if to say"wtf are we doing allowing him on the stage with us?"
I won't be holding my breath expecting a full reunion. Anyway, I don't think Gilmour wants to do the Floyd thing any more. Think he's happy enough to trot out and do the odd thing at the Royal Festival Hall as and when he fancies playing live.
